‘Painting with numbers: exploring life’s wonders’ An Inaugural Lecture on Thursday 29 May, followed by wine and canapes
Clive Osmond, Professor of Biostatistics and Medical Research Council Senior Scientist
Clive Osmond trained in mathematics and has been at Southampton’s Medical Research Council Epidemiology Unit since 1980. He worked extensively with David Barker, who established Southampton’s interest in the field of the “Developmental Origins of Health and Disease”. Clive has co-authored nearly 600 scientific articles, mainly on this theme.
In this lecture Clive will share his love of the subject, “probability and statistics”, and how it can be applied in diverse contexts, especially biology and medicine. The session will include: a history of the “Developmental Origins” hypothesis in Southampton, lessons learned on study design and analysis, appreciation of colleagues, particularly David Barker, mathematical reflections on “Developmental Origins”, topics that have entertained, and beautiful mathematics.
The technical level will be low.
