Have you ever wondered what really goes on behind the scenes at a major teaching hospital? Southampton General Hospital open day on Saturday, 27 September 2014, 11am to 3pm, takes you ‘through the keyhole’: inside our operating theatres inside the air ambulance and inside the human body. This is a free event that doesn't require booking.
It’s a fantastic day out for inquisitive minds of all ages
Meet the pilot and paramedics on the helipad. Pretend to be a surgeon and get hands on with the instruments. Make a fuss of the dogs who help people heal (Pets as Therapy). Zap the bad cells in our laser game. Play stem cell pinball. Walk through a giant inflatable pair of lungs. Beat the medic running game. Take part in our bubble blowing competition to see how fit you are
Fun for kids
We’ll make your teddy better in the teddy bear hospital. See what it’s like to get your arm plastered. Dress up as a scientist. Play a giant game of Operation. Guess the x-ray and label the bones on the skeleton. Learn how your body works and get involved in experiments in the Lifelab.
For grown-ups too
Look inside the human windpipe and airways with a simulated bronchoscopy. Watch our experts perform a virtual autopsy (11.30am and 1pm). Find out how we help patients who have had a major trauma (12.30pm and 2pm). See the plans for our new front entrance and tell us what you’d like to see inside. Find out how easy it is to give blood. Visit our donor centre and see how to give platelets. Follow a patient’s journey through the labs. Find out about hospital food and how we care for our patients. Tour the research facilities. Wear simulation specs to see how it feels to have different eye conditions. Find out about careers, courses and volunteering opportunities. Attend the annual general meeting (2.45pm).
