Event details

Are you wondering what is being built opposite the hospital foyer, next to the Somers Centre? Have you heard about the new Centre for Cancer Immunology but not sure what it is? Like to know more about the Centre plans? Or perhaps you’d like to understand more about the groundbreaking science of immunotherapy which is hitting the headlines? All these questions and more can be answered at the University’s interactive campaign stand from 27 June to 1 July.

Find out more

Situated in the hospital waiting area (right of the reception desk), the stand will be manned from 09:00 to 17:00. Chat to a campaign staff representative, question a researcher about the science and see if you can destroy the hidden cancer cells in our interactive ‘Killer T Cell shooting game’. Or if you are in a hurry, there’s plenty of leaflets to take.

Meet the expert in our special lunchtime slots

We are delighted to offer a ‘meet the expert’ slot each lunchtime between 12.30-1.30pm. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the life-changing science of cancer immunotherapy straight from one of the University’s top scientists. All are fantastic at translating the science into ‘lay’ terms so it’s accessible to everyone. You’re guaranteed to leave inspired. Here’s the programme for the week:

• Monday – Dr Anthony Williams (Reader in Clinical Immunology and Allergy) - My Immune System and Cancer: Friend and Foe

• Tuesday – Professor Mark Cragg - Killing Cancer: Harnessing the immune system’s magic bullets

• Wednesday – Professor Tim Elliott (Professor of Experimental Oncology & Director for the new Centre of Cancer Immunology) - T-cells to the rescue

• Thursday – Professor Martin Glennie (Professor of Immunochemistry, Head of Antibody and Vaccine Group) - How antibodies are winning the fight against cancer

• Friday - Aymen Al-shamkhani (Professor in Immunology) - Can our immune cells cure cancer?

You can come down anytime between 12.30-13.30 to meet them/ask any questions.

About the new Centre

Planned to open at Southampton General Hospital in 2017, the new Centre will be the UK’s first centre dedicated to cancer immunology research. Thanks to the University/Hospital partnership, Southampton leads the UK in cancer immunology research, with its unique ‘bench to bedside’ approach. Connecting world-leading scientists with state-of-the-art facilities in one interdisciplinary hub, the new Centre aims to build on recent breakthroughs, accelerate research progress and save more lives from cancer.

The Centre is the result of the University of Southampton’s major fundraising campaign – aiming to raise £25m by 2018. An amazing £18.7m has already been raised and the Centre is now in construction, but there is still over £6m to go. Find out more about the campaign and how you can support it or hear from some of the patients that have benefitted from our pioneering clinical trials at www.southampton.ac.uk/youreit.
