International Doctors. Postgraduate Medical Training in Southampton

We are International
We are International

The University of Southampton and the University Hospital Southampton have a close partnership and offer opportunities in clinical training fellowships, masters programmes and research (including PhD). There are several options available in Southampton for qualified international doctors who want post-graduate training.

General Medical Council registration

In order to work in the UK as a doctor, you must obtain General Medical Council (GMC) registration (this is a licence to practice).

Most international doctors are required to pass a Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB). Details can be found here on the GMC website .

Foundation Programme (2 year)

Suitable for a newly qualified doctor who has also obtained GMC registration. You will have some clinical experience as a qualified doctor, this programme offers the chance to be confident that your performance and experience are at the same level as F1 and F2 doctors in the UK. The University Hospital Southampton (UHS) will provide training, advice and supervision to enable you to start your career in the UK National Health Service (NHS).

Successful completion of this programme would enable you to be competitive for UK training posts.

Core Fellowships in Medicine, Surgery or Paediatrics (2 year)

These are 2 year programmes that train qualified doctors (with GMC registration) who already have at least 2 years experience. They are available in fields of medicine, surgery and paediatrics and will enable you to prepare for specialty applications. You will receive training, supervision, study leave and career advice.

This training offers the opportunity to rotate between different specialties within surgery, medicine or paediatrics.

Specialty training fellowships

For more experienced doctors who are ready to gain further experience in a specialty area we welcome approaches, either via the Medical Training Initiative (MTI) schemes or by individual doctors wishing to work in a specialty team. UHS can offer training for between 1 and 5 years up to consultant level.

There are fellowships for people already on the specialist register with a Post Certificate Completion of Training (post CCT) in many areas where you can sub-specialise prior to applying for a substantive consultant post.

Please contact us via MEDED@uhs.nhs.uk to find out what is available.
