Through my learning, my confidence in my own knowledge has increased and I have been able to use my skills to teach colleagues and other health care professionals about food allergy.

As a dietitian I have had a longstanding interest in food allergy and wanted to ensure that I was able to provide up to date and evidence-based advice for my patients and their families. I wanted to better understand the mechanisms underlying allergy. I chose to study at Southampton because it offered an MSc in Allergy that sounded like it would meet my learning needs and it had a great reputation.

I met other students who I have stayed in contact with and collaborated on various projects relating to food allergy including patient resources, a course for dietitians on cow’s milk allergy and more recently, a webinar on allergy testing.

Learning the theory and being able to put this into practice has given me confidence and enabled me to better help my patients manage their food allergies. Through my learning, my confidence in my own knowledge increased and I have been able to use my skills to teach colleagues and other health care professionals about food allergy.

The varied teaching methods including online group work enabled me to look at allergy from a variety of perspectives. The balance between taught modules and distance learning meant I was able to fit the course in alongside my working and family life.

The support and enthusiasm from the course leaders was superb- I even conquered my fear of statistics! The teaching staff established an environment where lasting friendships could be forged.

The Msc Allergy is a great platform to further your career in health as the theory and practical topics studied are directly transferrable to the clinical environment. I am now the Lead Children’s and Adult Specialist Allergy Dietitian at University Hospital Southampton where I work within 2 fantastic multidisciplinary teams to support children and adults with food allergy.
