After completing my MSc in Genomic Medicine at Southampton I have increased my breadth and depth of knowledge and it helped me to realise how other disciplines are also using genomics to improve patient care.

If there was one word that I could use to describe my time at the University of Southampton it is rewarding.

After studying cell biology at undergraduate level, I worked as a clinical scientist in the field of molecular genetics, and, having recently returned to work from maternity leave, I wanted to sharpen up my knowledge. Genetics is a fast moving field and I felt as if I had been left behind.

After completing my MSc in Genomic Medicine at Southampton I have increased my breadth and depth of knowledge and it has helped me to realise how other disciplines are also using genomics to improve patient care.

There have been so many highlights; from the enthusiasm of all the teachers and lecturers that delivered the course, to learning the most up-to-date information in a subject that I love.

My course was part-time and took place over two years. The course was delivered during a low number of long days to fit around people who were still working part-time or even full-time. It was a great benefit that at least half of all the teaching days were located within University Hospital Southampton and delivered by teachers who are the most experienced and enthusiastic people in the field.

This course has undoubtedly helped me in my career by providing the knowledge framework to help in the transition to a more genomic style of testing and I am excited to be part of the genomic movement
