“I am now studying for a PhD at the University of Southampton. This would not have been possible without the fantastic experiences and valuable skills I gained through my Masters programme.”

“After completing my undergraduate degree in physiology, I wasn’t quite sure about what I wanted to do next, so I spent time teaching English in Japan. But after a year abroad I realised how much I missed the scientific world and knew that undertaking a masters would propel me into academic research. So I came to the University of Southampton to do an MRes in Stem Cells, Development and Regenerative Medicine. Southampton has a great track record in world class postgraduate medical research and I have not been disappointed.

“My research was completed between the University’s Institute of Developmental Sciences and Southampton General Hospital where I had access to high quality equipment and really supportive staff in all my labs. I also enjoyed the freedom to explore my own ideas within my project, and being assessed on the quality of my research, not exams.

“I am now studying for my PhD in Infection, Inflammation and Immunity at Southampton. This would not have been possible without the fantastic experiences and valuable skills I gained through my Masters programme.

“I have gained many valuable skills that will undoubtedly help me in my future career including a wide range of biomedical research techniques from my two independent projects and a range of core scientific skills.

“But my time wasn’t just spent in the labs, I also enjoyed my experience advocating in faculty meetings as well as outreach activities. Particular highlights for me were taking part in Southampton’s Engineering Week and the Winchester Science Festival where I was able to interact with members of the public, including young children, through fun and interesting activities revolving around the work we do.

“I am currently organising the 2018 Pint of Science community event and acting as welfare officer for the Life Sciences Postgraduate Society.

“My time at the University of Southampton has been extremely stimulating and rewarding – they offer supportive programmes with excellent opportunities outside of research area to help students gain a highly employable skillset, and experiences that will make any application stand out.”
