Lee Page is a Postgraduate Research Student in the Pulmonary Immunology group, within Clinical and Experimental Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine, working with Dr. Karl Staples, Dr. Mirella Spalluto, Dr. Jodie Ackland and Professor Tom Wilkinson.

Lee graduated with a BSc in Sports Science at St Mary's University in 2018. He then completed an MSc in Human and Applied Physiology in 2019 at King's College London.

Lee studied his undergraduate degree in Sports Science at St Mary's University in London. During his undergraduate degree, Lee explored a wide range of topics in human physiology ranging from exercise physiology, the use of ergogenic aids on physiological performance and physiology in extreme environments. Lee continued his work in environmental physiology and ergogenic aids by investigating the effects of taurine supplementation on thermoregulation during exercise in the heat. His findings were later published in the European Journal of Sports Science.

After completing his undergraduate degree, Lee studied for an MSc in Human and Applied Physiology at King's College London. Here he studied human physiology from the molecular level through to applied physiology. During his time at King's, he gained a key interest in respiratory physiology and the changes in physiology in diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and Cystic Fibrosis (CF). He then completed a project investigating the role of iron supplementation in anaemic COPD and CF patients and its impact on pulmonary hypertension in COPD and respiratory infections in CF. For his MSc thesis, Lee investigated the role of ATP-binding cassette and solute carrier transporters in the translocation of the antipsychotic amisulpride at the blood-brain barrier in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and in normal ageing in an animal model of AD.

Lee is now undertaking a PhD at the University of Southampton, where his research focuses on the host-pathogen interactions in the lung. During his PhD Lee will be spending time in Siena, Italy at the GlaxoSmithKline laboratories.

Research interests

Lee’s research interests include innate immunity in the lung, host-pathogen interactions, immunity in chronic inflammatory lung disease, and hypoxia. I am currently investigating how the microenvironment within the lung shapes the immune response to infection. Specifically, the impact of hypoxia on the immune responses to infection, which has important implications for patients with chronic lung disease.
