Faculty of Medicine Research Conference 2014

A prize of £300 will be awarded to the postdoctoral researcher within the Faculty of Medicine who has published the best piece of original research in the last year.

Submitted papers will be assessed by an independent panel of senior academics. Consideration will be made of the significance of the work within the specific field of study, development and application of methodological and analytical techniques. Impact factor and citations will not be considered as part of the judging process.

The winner of the Prize will be expected to make a short (15 minute) oral presentation on their paper and attend the Prize Award Ceremony at the Faculty Research Conference on Thursday 19 June 2014.
Application criteria:

The prize will be awarded on the basis of one paper only, for which the researcher was first author or played a major role in the work.

Papers should have a publication date or acceptance letter dated between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2013

Papers should not have been submitted for a previous postdoctoral or postgraduate prize.

Applicants must have been employed as a postdoctoral researcher in the Faculty of Medicine during the time the work was carried out. Visiting researchers are not eligible to apply.
A scanned copy of the paper
should be submitted, together with proof of publication for papers in press or accepted for publication. Also included in the application must be:
A half page summary
explaining the research and the researcher’s contribution to the paper including the ideas; the development of the techniques; the interpretation of results and writing the paper. A brief statement describing why the research has made a significant contribution to the field should also be included.
A half page supporting statement
from the Supervisor is required. This should indicate the contribution of the researcher in the following 3 categories: conception and planning; execution and data collection; analysis/writing (applications will not be considered without this statement)
