Clinical Metabolomics Unit (CMU)

Embedded within the hospital environment the Clinical Metabolomics Unit (CMU) provides high-resolution state-of-the-art metabolic/redox phenotyping, lipidomics, and small molecule profiling approaches to support clinical activities and research. This includes patient stratification, diagnostic and prognostic biomarker discovery, pharmacometabolomics, and the mechanistic investigation of disease processes.

Housing a range of ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) platforms, the unit performs routine metabolomic, lipidomic, breathomic, and redox analyses. It also develops bespoke methods to provide quantitative assessments of specific pathways of interest and biomolecular targets. As well as analytical chemistry expertise, the unit also provides the necessary bioinformatics solutions to interrogate the multivariate datasets generated and integrate these with other 'omics datasets and patient phenotypes.
