Patient-Public Involvement

Patients and the public are essential partners in our Faculty research and education. We recognise that all members of the public can bring valuable perspective and expertise to our studies, or might simply have an interest in what we do. We are committed to involving and connecting to diverse global and local communities, and to widening participation of the next generation of undergraduate and postgraduate students in our science and health educational programmes.

Get involved in a research study

Clinical research in Southampton is a partnership between the University and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. Patient and public involvement in clinical research can provide expertise that comes from having experience of the illness or simply relate to their age or demographic. Your involvement could keep research relevant and on track, improve the quality and success of patient recruitment into clinical trials, influence correct ethical considerations, and help communicate the research that we do in lay terms.

Public events and open days

We offer a range of public engagement activities aimed at sharing research and information with the public, young and old. These are chances to exchange knowledge and ideas between researchers and the wider community. It enables us to interact, listen and learn about who might benefit from our work, and how our research might meet the needs of society. We value the opportunity for people to influence what we are doing on a local and global scale.

Inspiration for a career in science or health

Our staff and students participate in public engagement events and bespoke outreach events in partnership with the University Schools and Colleges team to inspire potential students that a career in science or health might be for them.
