Medicine combines science with humanity and allows me to pursue a career where I could make a positive impact in people's lives. It is also extremely diverse and interesting, so I knew it is something I wanted to pursue.

Southampton offers a very supportive environment in which to study and provides an intellectually stimulating and diverse course which allows you to develop the necessary skills to become a confident, competent and caring doctor.

Southampton really appealed to me because it offered a new systems-based curriculum with early patient contact, which would allow me to develop my theoretical knowledge alongside my clinical and communication skills.

There are so many different things to experience when studying at Southampton. I most enjoyed the opportunity to learn about the human body and how to treat and prevent disease, whilst speaking to and working with a diverse group of patients and staff. I’ve learnt so much through exposure to excellent doctors and fellow students.

One of my highlights was the opportunity to go to Colombo, Sri Lanka, where I spent time working in both the Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatric departments, serving the local population. I was also involved in peer teaching on several occasions and a poster presentation at a national conference. All of this has equipped me with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to start work as a junior doctor in the NHS.

The facilities at the University are very good – I made use of the Hartley Library on campus and Health Services Library at the hospital throughout my studies. I also enjoyed the use of the Jubilee Sports Centre for fitness and leisure activities which was well priced and equipped.

Southampton offers a very supportive environment in which to study and provides an intellectually stimulating and diverse course which allows you to develop the necessary skills to become a confident, competent and caring doctor. I’ve learnt to appreciate that the patient is so much more than just their disease and of the importance of a holistic approach to patient care.
