Training and teaching

Training

We organise regular technique-focussed seminars and workshops free-of-charge for all users of facility equipment. These include topics such as, introduction to microscopy, photonics theory, confocal microscopy, live imaging, optimising and analysing Western blots, image processing and image analysis. please see our news feed or look out for facility emails for details of the next set of seminars.
For equipment, we can arrange 1-on-1 or group training and assistance in experimental design for any technique on request.

Please see the staff page for contact details.

For external and industrial users we are happy to arrange training ranging from individual microscopes through to a complete advanced imaging course. Please contact Mark Willett for further details

Booking

We use Clustermarket for equipment booking: Booking Calendar.

Please contact a member of staff to be added to the booking system

Data management

Imaging, particularly 3D volumetric imaging and time lapse experiments can produce large amounts of data which can be difficult to transfer and store.

To cater for this, we have provided a high-capacity high-speed data server.

To connect please request filestore access

Path of folder to request: \\imc.files.soton.ac.uk\IMCData

Once authorised please follow these instructions:

  • Go to “This PC” or “My Computer”
  • Select “Map Network Drive” (at the top of the browser window)
  • Let the PC choose a drive letter
  • Enter: \\imc.files.soton.ac.uk\IMCData
  • Tick “Reconnect at sign”-in and “Connect using different credentials”
  • Log in with your university username and password. If you have difficulty logging in on your own PC registered on the network, Enter the domain “Soton\” in front of your username.

Undergraduate teaching

In addition to supporting world-class research here at Southampton University, the Imaging and Microscopy Centre is highly engaged in teaching the next generation of leaders in life-sciences research.

We provide lectures and training for practical specimen preparation, quantitative image analysis and hands-on use of advanced research-grade microscopes on undergraduate skills modules such as the highly popular BIOL6075 Biological Optical Imaging and BIOL6084 Advanced Neuroscience modules.

In addition to providing equipment and skills for Southampton’s excellent doctoral program We also support many undergraduate and Masters level imaging projects from a wide diversity of imaging topics every year.

Several graduates of BIOL6075 have taken professional and doctoral program posts in advanced imaging, including advanced photonics development, neuroscience and the National Biofilms Institute.
