Project Title: Fabrication of microfluidic devices replicating human microvasculature.

Ioannis obtained his Undergraduate degree (2017) in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Cyprus University of Technology (Limassol, Cyprus) with specialization in dynamics. His undergraduate research project concerned the Molecular Electronics and Photonics research unit under the supervision of Prof. Stelios Choulis. The project was focused on examining the behavior of bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaics using semiconductor polymers that act as electron donors and fullerenes or non-fullerenes that act as electron acceptors. Two of the selected devices were physically constructed. The effort and the time he devoted for the completion of the project rewarded him with a mark of 10 out of 10.

His engineering skills were expanded even more when he participated in the Erasmus program as an exchange student in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, as well as when he took part in IAESTE program by attending an internship at Nikola Tesla power station in Belgrade, Serbia.

Now he has joined the Micro and Nano Therapies (MiNaTher) group for his MSc project. He is supervised by Dr. Dario Carugo, focusing on fabricating microfluidic devices that would replicate the human microvasculature to investigate the circulatory distribution of microbubbles, their interaction with biological cells and explore the potential of microbubble targeting. The project involves both computational and experimental experiments. Two types of microfluidic devices will be designed based on a physiological and pathological-tumorous vasculature. The project is highly dynamic and multidisciplinary and closely interacts with researchers, PhD students and collaborators at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine.
