Elisabetta is a highly motivated researcher with a wide background in drug delivery systems, microfluidic technology and tissue engineering approaches. She is a PhD student at the Bioengineering Group, FEE, University of Southampton, with the supervision of Dr. Dario Carugo, Dr. Timothy Millar, Prof. Xunli Zhang and Prof. Martyn Hill. The project is sponsored by the interventional medicine company BTG and by EPSRC. The central goal of her PhD studies is to develop artificial, patient specific vasculature-on-a-chip platforms with potential utility for pre clinical evaluation and screening of cancer and sclero-therapy. The models will replicate the in vivo structure of veins and arterioles, recreating a functional vascular network. Before starting the PhD, she was research visiting student at the University College of London and at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at Oxford, where she developed skills in the production of microfluidic devices. Her master dissertation focused on the production of nanoparticles as drug delivery system (sponsored by European project SILVER) and in parallel she was engaged in a project dealing with the production of hydrogel scaffold for tissue engineering at the University of Ferrara, Italy.

Research interests

Microfluidics: production and design of microfluidic devices, organ-on-a-chip development.

Tissue engineering: development of biocompatible scaffold for cell encapsulation.

Advanced drug delivery systems: production, size analysis and effectiveness evaluation.
