Hi, I'm Hajah Nor Azalina Haji Abdullah and I studied MA Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching within Humanities at the University of Southampton.

Aza is from Brunei Darussalam and came to Southampton to study an MA in Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching.

How did you get interested in Modern Languages?

I love learning modern languages, I learnt a foreign language – Arabic language in school and university and I love to teach language.

Why did you choose to study Modern Languages at Southampton?

Because the courses being offered in the programme are interesting and have been useful in my current profession.

What did you like most about your masters programme?

I like the experience to do a small research during my MA and the most meaningful and unforgettable experience was being mentored by a known and inspiring professor in the School of Humanities, Prof. Ros Mitchell.

Which branches of Modern Languages did you specialise in?

I did a research on language teaching and learning.

What have you been doing since you graduated?

I’ve been teaching English language for lower secondary students aged 11-13. I’ve been putting practice some of language teaching theories and developing a communicative language teaching in my work.

Has studying Modern Languages at Southampton helped you in your career?

Yes, the quality of the programme helped me to become a language teacher even though I lack education courses in my qualification. The thinking and research skill also helped me to bring out similar potentials in young learners.

Would you recommend studying the subject to other people?

Yes. I recommend this programme to others with a similar interest and passion for learning and teaching language, simply for the excellence and quality of the programme that could provide a promising future in the language teaching and learning business.
