Prof. Mike Kelly takes over as Head of Modern Languages from Prof. Ros Mitchell

Published: 27 August 2013

Mike Kelly is Professor of French, specialising in the cultural and intellectual life of France in the mid-20th century and in contemporary language policy in Europe.

Mike is one of the leading experts on languages in the UK and leads a government funded programme, Routes into Languages, which works to increase the take up of languages in schools and universities.

He comments: ‘There is an increasing need for people with good knowledge of other languages and cultures, to contribute to the cultural, political and economic development of our interconnected world. Here at Southampton we have a growing community of linguists who will play a vital role in building the future. And while they are with us, they come on an exciting journey through languages and cultures across the world, and learn what makes people tick.”
