Leading academic from Scandinavia joins Modern Languages

Published: 19 September 2013

Modern Languages at Southampton are welcoming a distinguished academic from Finland who will join the department as a visiting fellow over the next three years.

Professor Anna Mauranen and her team from the University of Helsinki will work with members of the Centre for Global Englishes (CGE) on a comparative study of teaching in the English language and intercultural communication. They will explore how internationalisation operates in relation to English and contribute to a better understanding of the role of English in international higher education.

The appointment has been made possible through a University Diamond Jubilee Visiting Fellowship secured by Professor Jennifer Jenkins and Dr Will Baker from Modern Languages.

“I am delighted at this opportunity of strengthening research collaboration with my colleagues at Southampton, whose work I greatly appreciate,” says Professor Mauranen. “We have many mutual interests, and Professor Jenkins’ research group at Southampton and mine at Helsinki will explore these new avenues with heightened intensity.”

Their research will generate papers co-authored by groups at both institutions as well as a colloquium made up of scholars from both CGE and Helsinki at the 9th International English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) conference in Spain in 2016.
