We host three internationally renowned research centres: the Centre for Applied Language Research the Centre for Global Englishes and the Centre for Transnational Studies. We are also home to The Parkes Institute for Jewish/Non-Jewish Relations with its outstanding collection of books and journals on holocaust studies.

Our reputation attracts the very best academic talent in their chosen field, meaning that our postgraduate supervisors are highly experienced and are engaged in the most innovative research. We are one of the country’s leading international centres for humanities research. Humanities at Southampton is a multi-disciplinary grouping of Archaeology, English, Film, History, Modern Languages and Linguistics, Music and Philosophy.

Together these present our postgraduate students with a wealth of possibilities for interdisciplinary study and research especially in conceptual, cultural, linguistics and literary approaches, and in the study of society in the past and present.

My PhD brought me to Southampton for the first time, and I have been impressed with the quality of research Modern Languages and Linguistics is involved in. There are a lot of groups and initiatives organised by research students which help develop a sense of academic community. In the last year I’ve organised a conference, invigilated exams, taught international students and presented my work to my peers. There’s a lot going on!

International students
