Mr Ali Karakas is a Postgraduate Research Student within Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Southampton.

I studied English Language Teaching (ELT) for my BA at Uludag University and MA at Hacettepe University, Turkey. I worked as an English language teacher at different levels of education in different provinces across Turkey. Being sponsored by Mehmet Akif Ersoy University where I am also employed as a research assistant, I chose to pursue my PhD at the University of Southampton inspired by the research activities of the Centre for Global Englishes (CGE) and particularly due to the expertise of my supervisory team, Professor Jennifer Jenkins and Dr Will Baker.

Research interests

Currently, I am working on my PhD project entitled ‘Turkish Lecturers' and Students' Perceptions of English in English-Medium Universities'. The overriding objective of my research is to explore how lecturers and students view their English language skills and practices as well as their views on English language policies and practices of the universities where they are based. My research interests include English as a Lingua Franca, Global Englishes, Language Policies and Attitudes, Language Teacher Education, and Computer Assisted Language Learning.
