Over the last 8 years, I have worked in higher education in Vietnam, Angola, the United Kingdom, and Japan. In 2005, I graduated from my BA programme in Latin American Studies with the University of Portsmouth. I completed my MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL also with Portsmouth in 2011. Since 2014, I have been a part-time postgraduate student at the Centre for Global Englishes where I am working under the supervision of Dr Will Baker.

Research interests

My research interests include intercultural communication, study abroad, English use in Japan, and learner autonomy. These interests are reflected in my postgraduate study where I am using a qualitative case study design to gain an understanding of developments in intercultural awareness among Japanese short-term study abroad participants. A further aim is for the project to make a contribution to ELT research in Japan from a global Englishes perspective.

My project’s working title: ‘Examining the development of intercultural awareness among Japanese study abroad learners’.
