James Corbet is a Postgraduate Research Student in Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Southampton. He researches the development of grammar in Spanish heritage speakers raised in the United Kingdom, in a project funded by the ESRC South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership.

After obtaining a First Class honours degree in French and Spanish with Linguistics from Southampton, I worked as an English teacher in France and then as a graduate trainee in the Church of England before returning to the University to embark upon postgraduate studies. My MA was in Applied Linguistics for Research, with a specific focus on Language Acquisition, a passion I developed during my undergraduate course. I am now working on a PhD project in which I am investigating the development of aspectual meaning in Spanish past tenses by Spanish-English bilinguals in the United Kingdom.

I engage with modern languages, linguistics and my research on Twitter as @CorbetLinguist

Research interests

My current research is focused on heritage language acquisition - a special case of childhood bilingualism where the child’s main language of exposure in the home becomes their weaker language after a shift to the social majority language around the start of primary education. I am looking at aspectual meaning in the Spanish past tense forms of Spanish heritage speakers in the United Kingdom, using experimental techniques developed in generative second language acquisition research.

PhD Project (current), funded by the ESRC South Coast DTP, and supervised by Laura Domínguez and Jaine Beswick: The Acquisition of Spanish Past Aspectual Morphology by Spanish Heritage Speakers in the UK.
