Ms Kassie A Cigliana is a Postgraduate Research Student within Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Southampton.

BSc in Spanish Language Teacher Education and TESOL from Missouri State University, Springfield, Missouri, USA (2005-2009)

MA in Applied Linguistics from the Universitat de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain (2009-2012)

I am currently working towards my PhD in Applied Linguistics at the University of Southampton with a specific focus in Study Abroad and Language Acquisition.  Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, I received my BSc in Education at Missouri State University before moving to Barcelona to study a MA in Applied Linguistics and finally to Southampton to begin a PhD.  My research interests include second language acquisition, study abroad, motivational theory and how social interactions influence language learning.  I travel to Spain frequently for my research and enjoy working closely with my research participants to understand all aspects of their experiences abroad.

Research interests

My research focuses mainly on American learners of Spanish and their experiences in acquiring Spanish during a semester abroad in Spain.  Using a variety of both quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques, I investigate attributes such as attitude, motivation, social interactions and language contact for their impact on second language acquisition and learner experiences in this context.  I also hope to examine any changes to these affective and social factors during the students' residences abroad in order to highlight the individuality and dynamicity of these experiences.

Conference Contributions

Individual differences in American study abroad students in Barcelona:  A look into their attitudes, motivations and L2 contact. Residence Abroad, Social Networks and Second Language Learning (April, 2013). Southampton:  UK.

Predicting Adaptability:  Individual differences, cultural integration and language acquisition in study abroad. Adaptation and Assimilation:  Seventh Annual Humanities Postgraduate Conference, University of Southampton (March, 2014).  Southampton:  UK.

I have previously worked as an Independent Learning Advisor for the University of Southampton's pre-sessional EAP programme and a Spanish oral class tutor for Modern Languages and Linguistics.
