Research project: FLEUR: French Language Education: Unlocking Reading

Currently Active:

A Nuffield Foundation funded RCT investigating the teaching and learning of French reading in English secondary schools

Two different approaches to teaching French reading were investigated:  phonics instruction and strategy instruction.  We evaluated the effects of each approach on: French reading comprehension, French phonological decoding, French vocabulary learning, Self-efficacy for Reading and broader Language Learning motivation. Children who followed each approach all made progress; no approach proved statistically significant. However, learners in the phonics groups improved more at reading aloud in French. The strategies group gained more self-confidence in French reading.  Both the phonics and strategies group learned more vocabulary.
