Student experiences

Nearly all Modern Languages and Linguistics students will agree that their year abroad is one of the most rewarding experiences of their time at university.

A well-planned year abroad adds great value to your degree and can often help shape the path you choose to follow after your studies. As an individual, you will further develop your independence whilst acquiring skills which will help you mature both personally and academically.

Studying a year abroad will almost certainly be of benefit to your future career. Your experiences overseas will help you stand out from the crowd by demonstrating an understanding of different cultures and perspectives as well as a willingness to adapt to new environments.

Our undergraduate students travel abroad from Europe to the Americas and beyond to develop their language skills whilst discovering the realities of life, work or study in another country.

But, what is it really like to swop Southampton for a city in a foreign land? We have interviewed a selection of recent third year students to gain an honest insight as to their experiences.

Esther Robinson, who is studying French and Music, secured a placement at the Opera de Lyon.

Lisa Marsh studies Spanish and Portuguese. She picked Lisbon.

Glen Martin headed for Germany to teach.

Kendra Manin, currently studying Spanish, chose to go to Mexico.
