Supporting primary teachers with inquiry skills

Developing Inquiry Skills Across the Curriculum: a project with the Mary Rose Trust is a research project with the Mary Rose Museum funded by the Primary Science Teaching Trust. Four teachers from each of three schools in Southampton explored how inquiry skills can be developed in children in a cross-curricular project. Teachers worked with researchers from University of Southampton whose research involved the exploration and conservation of the Mary Rose. The aim was for teachers and researchers to gain a better understanding of inquiry in each of their settings. A day at the recently-built Mary Rose Museum was followed up by professional development sessions exploring how classroom research can provide evidence of impact on pupils learning, and development and trialling of inquiry-based resources. A dissemination event was held at the Mary Rose Museum, where participating teachers delivered professional development session to otherteachers attending.

This project has now developed into a Southampton Primary Inquiry network and we are running a series of twilight events at exciting venues across our region between October 14 and June 15.

Bringing oceanography into the key stage 3 curriculum

Bringing Oceanography Inland: a project using oceanographic science to teach content and skills at Key Stage 3.This project used the focus of oceanography as a context to deliver content and skills from the KS3 science curriculum. We brought together input from teachers, the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, Oxfordshire Local Authority, Oxford Museums, Science Oxford and STEM and Student Ambassadors, drawing on a broad range of expertise in curriculum development, professional development, subject knowledge, school and public engagement and pedagogy. Teachers worked with Student Ambassadors to develop resources for the classroom.
