Macmillan HORIZONS Programme

A cohort study to explore recovery of health and well-being in adults diagnosed with cancer

Funded by Macmillan Cancer Support

Chief Investigator- Professor Claire Foster

There is a growing imperative to understand the changing landscape of cancer and its consequences: as we do so, we will be better able to inform the design and delivery of cost effective interventions and services.

The purpose of this programme is to establish a series of cohorts of cancer patients to capture their health outcomes and experiences before they begin treatment and then regularly over their life-course to identify what influences these. During the programme we will systematically engage, and support, people affected by cancer as partners in our research.

Initially the cohorts will include

The Macmillan HORIZONS Programme led by the University of Southampton will provide the robust and comprehensive data that the patient, clinical, and policy communities need to transform care for people living with and beyond cancer. By carefully capturing evidence prospectively and over the time about cancer survivors’ life histories we will be in a position to understand what consequences are faced, when and what can be done to improve the lives of people living with and beyond cancer.
