I studied BA English and Music at the University of Southampton. While studying I was involved in a number of extra-curricular societies and groups, including the Southampton University Brass Band (SUBB), the Light Opera Society (LOPSOC), Showstoppers and the University Symphony Orchestra (SUSO). I was also a regular volunteer usher for Turner Sims evening concerts throughout my degree, and I was one of the inaugural Turner Sims interns for the department during my second year, working on programme editing, marketing and general administration tasks

Not only did my experiences at Southampton help me to improve my performance skills but they also really helped me focus on the aspects of the work that I really enjoyed,

Not only did my experiences at Southampton help me to improve my performance skills but they also really helped me focus on the aspects of the work that I really enjoyed, which helped to shape my module choices as I progressed further in my degree. One particular module that I really enjoyed, which helped to solidify my career aspirations was ‘How the Arts Work: a practical introduction to cultural economics’. Talking to industry professionals, administrators, and managers of arts organisations definitely helped me to gain more confidence to pursue an arts admin career from the outset. Not only did this module give me some clear insight into the arts organisations that we knew and had performed in, it showed us the business of the arts and how venues and organisations continue to find funding, and survive and thrive in this economic climate.

Since graduating, I have been working at my local producing theatre for the last three years, and I have just accepted a new job to become the Royal Overseas League (Arts) Music Co-Ordinator. I have also been able to make use of all the performance opportunities awarded to us through the department and the numerous societies, by continuing to perform on a very part-time basis alongside my full-time position.
