Lutes on TV

Published: 21 June 2008

Southampton's Head of Early Music and AHRC Fellow Elizabeth Kenny made two television appearances in the week of 16 June. For the BBC 4 series 'Early Music'.

She performed Dowland and Purcell songs with countertenor Robin Blaze. Her lute and theorbo accompaniments to 17th-century English song deployed rhetorical strategies and ornamentation developed during her fellowship. For BBC 2, she appeared on 'Supersizers Go . . . Elizabethan', part of a series in which food writer Giles Coren and broadcaster Sue Perkins explore Britain's history through food. Liz gave a Tudor lute lesson to Perkins for the progamme, but (unlike Coren and Perkins), she was not required to eat sheep's head or frog pie.
