Sacred Concerti Recording Released
The first CD based on Nancy Hadden's research as an AHRC Fellow in the Creative and Performing Arts at Southampton has just been released.
Nancy's work on the repertory and performance practice of the Renaissance flute has brought to light a range of fascinating music: Sacred Concerti: Heinrich Schütz - Johann Hermann Schein - Tobias Michael (CRD 3516) is a stunning collection of chamber works composed in Leipzig in the seventeenth century. A striking and unusual feature of all the pieces is the inclusion of transverse flute, an instrument at this time still in its Renaissance form. Made in a single piece of wood, with a cylindrical bore and no keys, the Renaissance flute has a tone quality as light, agile, clear and expressive as the soprano voice. The recording features the flute played by Nancy Hadden in various richly textured combinations with baroque violins, sackbuts, organ, lute and theorbo, in settings of German sacred texts for one to five voices.
