London Sinfonietta Performs Gordon Premiere

Published: 11 March 2009

Next week the London Sinfonietta premieres 'The Impermanence of Things,' a new piece for piano and ensemble by Southampton's Michael Zev Gordon.

The work is a London Sinfonietta commission, written for the pianist Huw Watkins. The composer explains, 'Its title is a Buddhist concept: accepting change may lead towards tranquillity. Yet I also feel a deep attachment to things. And my piece plays out these coexisting ideas and feelings, including the use of quotations of past music - objects, as it were, both held dear and disappearing.' The premiere concert, conducted by Ryan Wigglesworth, takes place at St Lukes, London, on Wednesday 18 March; a premiere broadcast will feature on the BBC Radio 3 programme 'Hear and Now' on Saturday 21 March.
