Hidden Henry: Henry the Musician
For BBC Radio 4's new series, 'Hidden Henry', Southampton academics Stephen Rice and Elizabeth Kenny discuss Henry VIII's relationship with music, illustrated with examples from a CD they have recently recorded at Hampton Court Palace.
The programme addresses Henry as a composer, a performer and an avid patron of the latest musical styles. It is the last in a five-part series marking the 500th anniversary of Henry's accession to the throne in 1509. 'Hidden Henry' illuminates aspects of the king's life that are often overlooked: in addition to his musical activities, these include his relationship with medicine and his health; Henry as scholar; as father; and as image-maker. The programme airs 29 May at 15:45, and will be available afterwards on the Listen Again service through the BBC website.
