The RMA has elected Mark Everist, Professor of Music and Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Humanities, as its next president.

At its Annual General Meeting on 27 November, the Royal Musical Association elected Mark Everist, Southampton’s Professor of Music and Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Humanities, as its next president.

The Royal Musical Association was founded in 1874 ‘for the investigation and discussion of subjects connected with the art and science of music’, a mission that has evolved to embrace all aspects of musical study, from history, analysis, and ethnomusicology to studies of perception, reception, and practice-led research.

Professor Everist commented ‘it is a great honour to be elected president of the oldest surviving learned society for music in the world; the future for all humanities disciplines is uncertain, and I look forward to confronting the challenges that face us’. Everist is the youngest president in the last half century.
