Scheding volume a Choice Outstanding Title

Published: 31 January 2011

Music and Displacement: Diasporas, Mobilities and Dislocations in Europe and Beyond, co-edited by Dr Florian Scheding, Lecturer in Music at Southampton, has been included in the Choice list of Outstanding Academic Titles for 2010. This prestigious list, published each January, reflects the best in scholarly titles reviewed by Choice in the previous year.

The 10th volume of the series Europea: Ethnomusicologies and Modernities, Music and Displacement features case studies by distinguished international scholars, whose work addresses art, popular, folk, and jazz musics. It draws upon recent research in gender and post-colonial studies, critical theory, migration and diaspora to explore the dichotomy of placements and displacements, thus far largely ignored by musicologists, and maps their significance for musical landscapes and music history in theoretical and practical terms.

Inclusion on the list is an honour reflecting recognition by the academic library community. As the Choice reviewer noted, Music and Displacement 'raises
timely questions not previously examined, questions relevant to the study of music and to the study of an increasingly mobile, diverse, 21st-century society. Highly recommended.'
