AHRC fellowship for new work by Gordon

Published: 8 July 2011

Reader in Music Michael Zev Gordon has been awarded a Research Fellowship by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to support the completion of a new commission for the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

The work's research element involves exploration of fragmentation, time and the limits of coherence, with a particular focus on how orchestral texture can 'test' these areas. Poetically, the piece returns to one of Michael's recurring subjects: the twin pulls of the passionate and the contemplative. As part of the fellowship, Michael will detail the composition process itself in a BBC Radio 3 blog.

The work will be performed at the Barbican in London in Autumn 2012, during the BBC Symphony Orchestra's 2012/13 season. Read Michael's blog, Notes Towards Composition, for more about the project.
