New old piano for Music at Southampton

Broadwood grand piano built in 1796

Music has just taken delivery of a fine Broadwood grand piano forte built in 1796.

The instrument, which carries the number 937, has been carefully restored to good playing condition, and will support performance research by Southampton staff and students. Broadwood was the most famous English piano firm of the late eighteenth century, and built instruments for generations of leading composers and performers. The Southampton instrument is similar to those Haydn used on his London sojourns between 1791 and 1795.
