Call for papers - Theory and Analysis Graduate Students Conference

Music at Southampton will host the next instalment of the The Society for Music Analysis annual Theory and Analysis Graduate Students (TAGS) Conference on Saturday 21 April 2012. The proposal deadline is Friday 10 February 2012, and student travel bursaries are available.

Music's Professor William Drabkin will deliver the keynote address,
'Schenker's Army: Defending the Fundamental Line of Mozart's G minor Symphony'.

Delegates will be invited to register from 9.30-10.30am on Saturday and sessions will finish by 6.30 pm. The event aims to
provide a supportive and friendly environment in which postgraduates
can gain experience in presenting their work and meet fellow
researchers. Participants who do not wish to give a paper are also
very welcome. Proposals are invited from postgraduate students for
20-minute papers addressing any analytical or theoretical subject. We
also welcome submissions in the following areas:

  • Performance, Analysis and Improvisation
  • Composition and Analysis
  • Popular Music Analysis
  • Perception of Musical Structure
  • Analysing non-Western Musics
  • Music & Philosophy
  • Analysing Atonal Music
  • Analysing Performance
  • Analysis and Narrativity
  • Analysis and Computer Modelling
  • Music Analysis and Pedagogy
  • The Future of Music Analysis


Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be sent by email to Kenneth Smith at events at sma.ac.uk (email size limit = 5MB). Please include name, affiliation, postal address, email address and AV requirements on a separate cover sheet. Organisers of themed sessions should submit a brief overview together with the individual abstracts.

The closing date for receipt of proposals is 10 February 2012. All
those submitting proposals will be notified of the outcome by Friday
24 February 2012.

Accommodation
TAGS 2012 is a one-day event, but should you require accommodation, please email events at sma.ac.uk for a list of local hotels. Early
booking is advised.

Student Travel Bursaries
A limited amount of bursaries (of up to £100) for travel and
accommodation expenses are available for existing student members of the SMA. Further information on the application process may be found here.
