Southampton researcher Dr Valeria De Lucca, British Academy Fellow and Lecturer in Music, organized the first major international conference on costume in opera and musical theatre this spring.

The conference, "Fashioning Opera and Musical Theatre: Stage Costumes from the Late Renaissance to 1900," (29 March-1 April) was co-produced by the University of Southampton and the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, and took place at the Fondazione's beautiful centre in Venice, Italy, and featured papers by delegates from Europe, Canada, the United States and Japan. The event brought together scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, including music, costume history and stage design, to discuss the history, economics and aesthetics of stage costumes in European opera and musical theatre.
