Southampton's Dr Francesco Izzo is currently working in Florida with Sarasota Opera on a new production of Giuseppe Verdi’s second opera, Un giorno di regno.

This will be the world premiere of Izzo's critical edition of the piece, forthcoming in the Works of Giuseppe Verdi (University of Chicago Press). The edition includes two previously unknown compositions by Verdi, made available for the first time. Opening night is Saturday, 2 March.

Izzo has been working with conductor Victor DeRenzi, stage director Martha Collins, and a distinguished cast of singers, advising on ornamentation and cadenzas and offering insights into the new opportunities presented by the critical edition. He will also present two pre-performance lectures for the audience at Sarasota Opera.

An expert on Italian opera and the co-director of the American Institute for Verdi Studies, Izzo has recently completed his book Laughter and Revolutions: Opera buffa in Mid-Nineteenth-Century Italy, to be published later this year in the series Eastman Studies in Music (University of Rochester Press). The production of Un giorno di regno kicks off a series of initiatives organised by Izzo to mark the 200th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi, including two exhibitions and the international conference Verdi's Third Century: Italian Opera Today, which will take place at the Verdi Institute's New York home in October 2013.
