University of Southampton Voices Give Inaugural Performance

Published: 29 April 2013

Following the recent appointment of Turner Sims Professor Harvey Brough, the University’s Music Department worked with Turner Sims and Harvey to form a community choir in Autumn 2012, giving staff and students across the University an opportunity to come together and sing in their lunch breaks. There were no auditions and no music-reading skills or singing experience necessary – the aim was to have fun and strengthen community spirit.

A successful first term results in a growing demand for the choir, whose membership altered week by week as staff fit rehearsals around their work commitments, to continue and work towards their first public performance. As a staggeringly versatile musician: singer, composer and arranger who has worked successfully in the classical, jazz and pop fields for over 30 years, Harvey worked with the choir on folk songs and the Freedom Chorus, a collection of songs arranged by Harvey himself.

Friday 15 March 2013 saw the culmination of the Robert Mitchell Project, an intense musical project in which award-winning UK Steinway Artist and Jazz composer Robert Mitchell worked with a student choir to perform new music and arrangements that he will be taking on tour – a pre-performance foyer gig for the University of Southampton Voices was an opportunity not to be missed and a challenge that every member rose to. Accompanied by a student band, the choir performed with enthusiasm and professionalism whilst maintaining the relaxed atmosphere that so many of its members joined for.

The choir has continued to meet following the Easter vacation and new members, men and women, are always welcome, including those who are not able to commit long-term. 40-minute rehearsals occur most Wednesday lunchtimes, allowing people enough time to fit the meetings into their lunch breaks, all in the intimate setting of Turner Sims, one of the finest music venues in the country and located on the University’s Highfield campus.

If you are interested in joining the choir, or just seeing what it is all about, please do come along to a session. There is no need to audition or register in advance. If you would like to be added to the choir’s mailing list, please contact Victoria Hooper on V.Hooper@soton.ac.uk. Alternatively, please find the University of Southampton Voices on Facebook or see their university webpage.
