'More from Music' - Focus Groups with Cochlear Implant Users
A multidisciplinary team of researchers from the Department of Music, the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, and Electronics and Computer Science are holding focus groups with adult cochlear implant users to evaluate a demo online version of a computer-based music aural rehabilitation programme.
In 2011 and 2012 cochlear implant users from the University of Southampton Auditory Implant Service participated in a series of music workshops and in a randomised crossover trial of a computer-based music aural rehabilitation programme called the ‘Interactive Music Awareness Programme’ (IMAP). Throughout the workshops and the trial participants gave feedback on the programme’s sessions and software. This feedback has been used to further develop and expand an online version of the programme, which now features material from major artists including Sir Cliff Richard and Philip Selway (Radiohead).
The 2013 focus groups form the latest stage of the participatory design process used by the team to develop and evaluate the IMAP, ensuring that the needs and preferences of potential users are accommodated before the full programme is launched online at www.morefrommusic.org in January 2014.
The development and evaluation of the IMAP is part of the ‘Compositions for Cochlear Implantees’ research project funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council.
