New Turner Sims Internships launched

Published: 29 January 2014

Music at the University of Southampton and Turner Sims are proud to be partners in a new programme of internships for students aspiring to careers in arts management. Four students - Talea Bartlett, Cerys Beesley, Louisa Healey and Rebecca Gribble - have just begun their one-year posts as the inaugural Turner Sims Interns this month.

The paid positions, worth £500 per semester, will provide professional experience in marketing and promoting artists and events, compiling and editing programmes and advertising, and other essential administrative skills. The programme is supported by the Student Centredness Fund, which draws much of its funding from donations by University of Southampton alumni. Southampton has an outstanding record of placing its graduates in a wide range of arts administration posts, and this new programme is set to further enhance this strand of work.

Kevin Appleby, Concert Hall Manager at Turner Sims, says:
"We’re delighted to welcome the interns as part of the team at Turner Sims for the forthcoming year. They will be creating, implementing and evaluating a strategic student marketing plan, alongside writing and editing classical concert programmes, as well as assisting with the smooth running and upkeep of the Marketing Department, which will include tasks such as updating social media channels and communicating with the press. We look forward to working with them as a valuable resource, but as interns in one of the most respected music venues in the country, we also hope they will benefit greatly and gain useful experience that will assist them in their futures outside the University as arts professionals."

The Turner Sims Interns will help support the University’s new Southampton Showcase programme, which provides professional training and opportunities for its advanced undergraduate and postgraduate performers. In addition to promoting and managing university and external bookings, participants organise workshops on fees, contracts, working with agencies, and other topics that can help students prepare themselves for successful freelance or portfolio musical careers.
