Music and Web Science: A New Interdisciplinary Degree at Southampton

Published: 21 September 2015

The Music industry is fast becoming an all-digital domain – from composition and recording, through production, distribution, marketing and consumption – and much of this transformation has been facilitated and driven by the Web; with novel business models, new modes of consumption, communications via social media, and Big Data.

At this exciting time, the University of Southampton is launching a new interdisciplinary degree, BSc Web Science (Music)*, building on the University's pioneering development of Web Science, a new discipline that aims to provide a thorough understanding of the Web as a social and technical phenomenon. This demands new ways of working, across traditional academic disciplines, to build skills and expertise in the technical underpinnings of the Web as well as the social processes that have shaped its evolution and the impact of the Web on music and society as a whole.

Students on the course will work alongside students in Music and other Web Science degrees, gaining insights from computing, sociology and music disciplines. Web Science (Music) will equip students with unique cross-cutting knowledge and skills, marketable to a broad range of employers and employment sectors.
