Eroticism in Early Modern Music

CMRC member and Professor of Music Laurie Stras's book, Eroticism in Early Modern Music, a collection of essays co-edited with Bonnie Blackburn, has won the award for the best collaborative project on women and gender for 2015 from the Society for the Study of Early Modern Women.

The award committee chose this book for its wonderful contribution to the growing literature on Renaissance music focusing on questions of the body, gender, and sexuality. It praised the wide-ranging nature of the essays Laurie and Bonnie collected, essays investigating the eroticism of musical rhetorics in Italian, but also French and English, songs and operas. The committee was impressed with how the individual contributions combine the close analysis of scores and lyrics with a contextual approach that opens up the subject matter to scholars other than music historians.

Laurie is currently finalising her monograph, Women and Music in Sixteenth-Century Ferrara, which will appear with Cambridge University Press. Later this month, she will be recording a new CD with her ensembles, Musica Secreta and Celestial Sirens, of convent polyphony from the mid-sixteenth century.
