Francesco Izzo (Professor and Head of Music, University of Southampton) has been appointed Director of the newly formed Comitato Scientifico of the Festival Verdi at the Teatro Regio in Parma (Italy).

The appointment was announced on Saturday, 21 January in a press conference at the Teatro Regio. The Comitato Scientifico also includes Francesca Calciolari (Casa Ricordi), Damien Colas (CNRS, Paris), Alessandra Carlotta Pellegrini (Istituto Nazionale di Studi Verdiani), and Alessandro Roccatagliati (University of Ferrara).

Francesco and the rest of the Comitato Scientifico will work with the Teatro Regio’s General Manager, Anna Maria Meo, and with the newly appointed Music Director of the Verdi Festival, Maestro Roberto Abbado. One of the key objectives of the Festival Verdi for the coming years is the systematic use in performance of the critical editions prepared for The Works of Giuseppe Verdi, the opera omnia co-published by the University of Chicago Press and Casa Ricordi, for which Francesco serves as General Editor. The committee headed by Francesco will also advise performers and administrators of the Festival Verdi, and provide leadership and support for a range of publications and outreach activities, from the preparation of programme books and digital content to the organisation and delivery of workshops and study days.

This year’s Festival Verdi launches on 28 September with the premiere performance of the new critical edition of Jérusalem (1847), Verdi’s first French opera. Further information on the Festival Verdi and The Works of Giuseppe Verdi available here:
