Associate Professor in Composition Dr Benjamin Oliver has been shortlisted in the Contemporary Jazz Composition category of the British Composer Awards 2017 for his Loop Concerto for jazz trio and large ensemble. Celebrating the art of composition and showcasing the creative talent of contemporary composers and sound artists, the British Composer Awards are presented by BASCA and sponsored by PRS for Music; in association with BBC Radio 3 providing exclusive broadcast coverage.

Loop Concerto was premiered at Turner Sims in February 2017 as part of the University of Southampton Music Department ‘Loop Project’, and featured Southampton students and staff performing alongside leading jazz musicians Ivo Neame (piano), Jasper Høiby (bass) and Jon Scott (drums).

The winners in each category will be announced at an awards ceremony presented by BBC Radio 3 presenters Andrew McGregor and Sara Mohr-Pietsch at the British Museum in London on Wednesday 6 December 2017.
