A recording featuring Southampton's Head of Early Music, lutenist Elizabeth Kenny, has won the 2017 Gramophone Award in the Early Music category. 'Dowland: Lachrimae or Seven Tears' appeared on the Linn label, and features Professor Kenny as guest star with the viol ensemble Phantasm, directed by Laurence Dreyfus.

The recording, released in July 2016, focusses on John Dowland's Lachrimae, an intense and passionate set of pavans - instrumental dances - first published in 1604.

Gramophone's original review praised Phantasm's 'totally convincing and absorbing' performances, stating 'nothing is routine in Phantasm's hands.'

***** 'At the heart of this disc are the seven variants of the utterly memorable Lachrimae theme, played by Phantasm with their expressive warmth and exquisite subtlety.' The Observer

***** '...a masterpiece...a valuable addition to our understanding of this remarkable publication, and Dreyfus and Kenny's excellent programme notes give us further valuable players' insights into this extraordinary music.' Early Music Review

***** '...once it grips you, it's unlikely ever to let go, especially in a performance as finely balanced as this.' The Irish Times
