Impact Award for Jupiter Research

Professor Mark Everist has been awarded £79,000 from the AHRC Follow-on Funding for Impact and Engagement for his project ‘JUPITER: Mozart in the C19th Drawing Room’.

In 19th-century Britain, one of the most common ways of hearing large-scale works, such as symphonies and concertos by Mozart, or symphonies by Haydn and Beethoven, was in arrangements for the ‘Jupiter’ ensemble (fortepiano, flute, violin and ‘cello). Large numbers of these editions were published in London between c1820 and c1860. Led by Mark Everist and also involving the University of Southampton's Head of Keyboard, Professor David Owen Norris, the project seeks to re-establish the ‘Jupiter’ ensemble in our understanding of late 18th- and early 19th-century concerted instrumental music. It will record a complete CD of Mozart’s orchestral music on the Hyperion label, produce concerts and workshops all over the British Isles, and make a web-mounted video of JUPITER arrangements in a reconstruction of early 19th-century performance conditions in collaboration with the Hampshire Regency Dancers.
