The University of Southampton’s Professor of Musical Performance will launch a new book on creative identity at the Hay Festival this weekend.

Professor David Owen Norris is the father of the award-winning playwright and novelist, Barney Norris. Barney’s latest book, The Wellspring, is a dialogue between father and son on the nature of cultural inheritance. The musical compositions of the one, and the writings of the other, display many shared characteristics. Unusually, both father and son studied at Keble College, Oxford – David is an Honorary Fellow, Barney is Playwright-in-Residence – but it is the differences between them that provide some of the book’s deepest insights. The launch event will take place on the Bank Holiday, May 28th, at 7.45pm in Hay Parish Church, and it will take the form of a discussion, across two art forms, of the creation of a personal language, with readings and music. The book is published by Seren Press.
