Event details

This event will be led by danzón specialist, Dr Hettie Malcomson.

Danzón is a popular Cuban music-dance form which is performed daily in public plazas in Mexico. It is a precursor to genres such as mambo, cha-cha-chá and ‘salsa’ and is often played by saxophones, trumpets, trombone, bass, güiro and a virtuosic timpanist. Danzón is relatively slow and is usually danced by couples, often between the ages of 50 and 80 plus.

This free, one-hour event will include a short talk, a participatory dance workshop and will culminate with Southampton's Hartley Danzonera featuring Dan Mar-Molinero, Thomas Seltz and Southampton University Music Department students performing live.

This workshop is one of a number of events to celebrate Mexico Week at the University of Southampton, organised by Mexsu: Centre of Mexico-Southampton Collaboration. The website for this is https://www.southampton.ac.uk/mexsu/
